When A Grain Of Wheat Falls – Original Christian song by Sarah Begaj

I felt the Lord impressing upon me to write this song over the last 3 months. It is never easy when something has to die in our lives. Jesus said in John 12:24 -26“ Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain. He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honour.”
On 19th March (Mother’s day in the UK) the Lord clearly told me to lay down playing my violin in worship. It was the beginning of a laying down of many areas of service, friendships even. We can be so busy in serving the Lord that we are too busy to hear His voice. The laying down of ourselves and our own ideas in obedience to the Lord can seem like death, but there is a promise that just as we have died with Christ we are also raised with Him and He will bring forth fruit. It is costly to heed the voice of God but so much more costly not to. God requires our full attention and obedience when He wants to give us a new directive. That requires us to be in a place where we’re ready to hear. Our story in all its detail would take pages to write, but this song encapsulates the call of God upon our lives, to be willing to forsake all else for the upward call of God. The Lord gave me back the violin to play as I obediently wrote this song. I pray it encourages whoever reads this to step out in obedience and follow the call of God. For the harvest truly is plentiful but the labourers are few.

Written and recorded by Sarah Begaj, filmed by Ilir Begaj (thank you!!). With thanks also to our Kaitlin for appearing with me in this and James for holding the phone!

LYRICS

When a grain of wheat falls to the ground
And there’s no-one to notice, not even a sound
And the wind and the rain press it down
Buried in death, darkness surrounds

Jesus calls you to lay down your life
Come and take up your cross, not looking behind
With your eyes fixed above on the prize
Buried with Christ, forever alive

Oh the fruit will abound when you lay your life down
And your heart cries ‘let Thy will be done’
Now with Christ crucified in His glory arise
Singing Lord let Thy Kingdom come

Can you hear His voice calling you friend?
Come and follow me, I’ll make you fishers of men
Few will heed though the harvest is white
Sowing in tears reaping new life
