A city on a hill

A city (or in this case a 1000 year old church) on a hill cannot be hidden…I love this little church situated on a hill not far from where I live. I used it for a song video I’m currently piecing together…But what it represents to me at the moment speaks volumes (which I’ll come back to shortly).

At the moment in England it feels like there is a darkness over this land. Under restrictions of the third national lockdown due to covid it could easily cause a person to despair or wonder if there is any end in sight. For others maybe the intense political turmoil the other side of the Atlantic has cast a great shadow? Yes the end is in sight. But perhaps not as we envisage. 1 Peter 4:7 says
” But the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers. And above all things have fervent love for one another, for “love will cover a multitude of sins.”

How important this message is. Amidst the struggle for truth versus conspiracy there is only one ultimate truth which is found in the Word of God. His truth will prevail. And our response should be fervent love! I often think of the response of the Captain of the Lord’s army (aka Jesus) to Joshua when Joshua asked whose side He was on. The answer was a resounding “no”! It is not whose side God is on. The correct question would be, am I on His side?..This is a time of great division Jesus spoke of- the fire which divides families. We will fall on one side of the divide or the other…

So back to this tiny church on a hill which is visible from quite a distance. Jesus, the light of the world has imparted His light to us, and calls us a city on a hill which cannot be hidden. John 1:4-5: “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.”
As the canvas of the world grows darker by the day, the lights will shine brighter against the darkened backdrop. The darkness will not understand. Hard times may ensue, but the Lord wants His church to be a light to those walking in darkness. Lord don’t let our light or love grow cold.
